Andrew photographs in a straight documentary style in black and white and color and he specializes in the American West. Dr. Gulliford's books include America's Country Schools, Boomtown Blues: Colorado Oil Shale, Sacred Objects and Sacred Places: Preserving Tribal Traditions, and he recently edited Preserving Western History.
He has received the Colorado Book Award, a “Take Pride in America” National Award from the Secretary of Agriculture for "outstanding contributions to America's natural and cultural resources;" the National Individual Volunteer Award from the U.S. Forest Service; the 2 nd Annual James Marston Fitch Mid-Career Award for Historic Preservation; and the Award of Merit from the American Association of State & Local History.
Dr. Gulliford photographs, researches, writes, and edits on the Old West, the New West and the Next West, though “Gulliford's Travels” have taken him and his cameras across the United States and Europe. For the Smithsonian Institution he has led tours on the Columbia and Snake Rivers in Washington and Oregon and on the Lewis and Clark Trail by canoe and horseback in Montana and Idaho . For the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Geographic Society he has lead tours to Western national parks in Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona.
